Any recommendations for a good quality compost for growing vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers? Last year was a disaster and the compost I purchased was infested with fungus gnats.

I think far too many fancy lavender around these days and less likely to like our conditions. The old fashioned lavender was often used as hedging when I was young and fields of the stuff is grown for it's oil.

If you want something unusual try Ugni. They are related to blueberries but the fruit ripen much later and have a fragrant taste - we liked them, more for snacking on than pies I suspect. I bought the variegated one and have it in my front garden. I think it would be OK in a pot.
