I have planted Deutzia which not only have a lovely green from early spring to late summer and allow planting of flowers around them. but they also have lovely flowers which are loved by bees and butterflies in May/June. You could plant a Deutzia in the middle of your beds. They don't need care...

My hubby once had to audit a slaughter house - it was cattle. He had to do a stock check. I think it was pretty smelly. I would have refused as I would never be the same again. I hate going in butchers because of the smell.

I can only identify the ivy in your photos, do you know what species your hedge is? The ivy has undoubtedly taken a hold over it, depriving it of light, nutrients and water. A close up of the hedging with leaves visible would be helpful.

the main thing with nutrients is they get outcompeted by grass, trees, brambles, and in poor soil those take longer to colonise if at all. wild meadows were maintained like that with now extinct ruminents, deer and cattle doing that job now to an extent.there are many perrenial native flowers...

I used to start mine in autumn and keep in a cold greenhouse over winter, did that in Essex and for a number of years in Devon. These days I chit them in February and then into root trainers in the cold greenhouse. Why the change? I found that with the milder winters they were growing too much...
