Just joined so thought I'd put up a brief hello.

I'm not much of a gardener so I'm seeking help rather than informing, I don't have much of a garden either, just a back yard - so it is planters and pots for me.

    Cheers
    Paul

    Hi and welcome.

You can do a lot with a back yard you know. My mam has a yard, and over the years it has become a bit of a mediterranean style retreat. She's got a decked section where she puts the fold out picnic table in summer, with water features and all sorts, and loads of containers full of herbs and bold flowers. She's not a gardener though, so I have to do much of the work for her.

I reckon the best plan for a yard is to remember that the walls are valid growing space too. Wall mounted containers, trellis, hanging baskets etc are all winners. And you have an advantage not typically found in the garden too. A yard is sheltered from the worst of the weather, and with everything being in containers, you can move them about as you like. No dull patches, because when, for example, a flower is finished, you just move it to a lower profile spot and bring in something that's just getting ready to put on its show.

There's much to be said for yards.
