I have a shaded bed which is up against a decking area, it hardly gets any sun at all. Can someone advise what I should plant there? I was thinking of having a rockery there but then read that rockeries should be in a full sun position. Alteratively, what plants like total shade?

Total shade is difficult, but there are some lovely plants for part shade - ferns, fatsia, bulbs like anenome arisaema. some lillies (Henrii) - well just some for starters.

It depends on the depth of the shade. No plants will grow in total darkness, but you could create a lovely cool, green spot using ferns. There are lots to choose from and some have coloured fronds to add some interest. Then you could add spring flowering bulbs, if the shade is not too deep. This is one of our shade areas, created by putting 70% shade netting over the top.

Also depends on whether shade is damp or dry. I have an area under a big old cedar which in winter is almost totally shaded and dry. Ivy, Arums, celandines, and blue bells are growing without help from me. Further away from the tree, where it is quite damp, I have foxgloves, ferns, tiarella, dicentra and more spring bulbs.
