    Hi,

Many years ago my wife and I visited a number of places before SatNav and often it was a nighmare finding top secret homes. It's surprising how many homes don't have a street number at all or have a mile long front garden needing binoculars.

    Street numbers_501.JPG

Postmen/women and delivery drivers love the numbers I made and installed. The bungalow is on a cul de sac with only odd numbers and to make it more difficult the numbers start at #13. I wonder what happened with #1 to #11?

The front porch I made and installed is another useful feature for accepting parcels.

    I like making things.

    Kind regards, Col.

We don't have numbers but we have names in stead, but lots don't have any as you say which becomes hard when you are looking for the right house, as post code comes to our house we get lots of other peoples delivery's !!!!!!
We just had heating oil delevered, driver came straight to our house and tank is in a eaisy place to get to + i built a stone step and platform for the driver to stand when filling the tank, i allway get a comment about the platform,,"wish things like this were at all house's we go to" so it doesn't take much to make life eaisyer for other people, he was here less an 10 minutes for pulling up to going

I look forward to the day when What3words becomes the universal address system.

I've noticed this What3words mentioned on here before - what is it ( other than @pete 's translation ) ?
I have street number, village, town, county and Postcode - usually works in most cases.

Every three square metres on the entire planet has a “name” based on three words separated by full stops. There’s an app which shows a map with its corresponding names. Or a “name” that leads you to its place on the map. So, for example, one bit of the run up to the front door of Buckingham Palace is “happy.songs.worm”. Instead of number, street name, village, town, county, post code, all you need are three words.

Where I live, in the middle of nowhere, delivery drivers are very happy to be given my what3words address in advance of their visit.

I think what3words is a fantastic concept, but I recall reading an article that said it was unlikely to be widely adopted due to regional accents and non-native language speakers causing confusion especially in emergency situations

As an English person, with a Scottish mother and an Irish uncle, I have always laughed at spelling. My first visit to Edinburgh when I was a child involved me being told to ask the taxi driver to take us to Dalziel Place. That’s “Dee-el” to you. And my uncle lived in Laois, that’s “leash”. Yes, non-native speakers’ efforts and regional accents are a nightmare.

What three words are a good idea and the app (actually an API - Application Programming Interface) is free to individuals but chargeable to businesses where they charge for the professional interface. This is used to find places and extremely helpful to delivery companies. It has made the owners quite rich.

You can get the app free of charge directly through their website.

It must have been quite a computer programme that devised that.
