    Agree with @Michael Hewett that it looks like a root problem. Vine weevil would probably have been very visible when you took it out but there are other, small root pests that could be the case....

    @Tidemark, that article is so moving. Made me well-up. Although it doesn't say much about social care back then.....and I'm not sure it was as badly underfunded as it is now.
