My Garden Progress
I found that Phlox is pretty much bullet proof. If it was me, I'd dig it up, rinse all of the soil from the roots. Pull all of the grass and then re-plant the phlox. I think it would forgive you.

I find there are also variations in the given size in the UK depending on the manufacturer. 1/2 sizes no longer available in many cases.

Ideas for shady front garden....
If you did decide to remove your grass areas @machtucker, Hakonechloa makes good ground cover. I have it planted under an Acer in my lower garden shown below in summer, autumn and winter.
