Cross runner beans
I thought I read somewhere that beans and peas can, can, self pollinate before the flowers are fully open. Not sure if that is true but to make a sure cross will involve removing the male parts...

Ideas for shady front garden....
If you did decide to remove your grass areas @machtucker, Hakonechloa makes good ground cover. I have it planted under an Acer in my lower garden shown below in summer, autumn and winter.
