I’d be surprised if Beth Chatto’s gardeners use slug pellets or insecticides . Birds tend to be vocal here in the morning and out looking for worms mainly early morning and at dusk. Sound for me also includes wind through the trees and swishing through dried grasses in winter.

@GreenFingeredPete I agree re tomato seeds. I keep packets sealed in the fridge, and have had good germination of Purple Cherokee for 3 years. There were about 100 seeds in the packet - shame to waste them. I grew about 10, and gave spare youngsters to friends.

Was prob a long term thing maybe 5yrs or just keep at it , i know with most plants crosses are never stable but i was thinking over the years once i get something i like and only planting them back the next year it should help cut down varation. Also i dont know if this is ever garderns dream...

I'm notoriously bad at labelling.My best effort is masking tape on the pot and a scribble with a permanent marker. That works a treat, and the solution lasts so well that when I re-use the pot I find it very instructive that something I thought was a forced Hyacinth in fact must be a Jalapeno...
