All I know is that after applying manure (both freshly laid and rotted) for 11 years here my soil is completely unrecognisable to what I inherited, the top 5 to 6 inches now being a lovely free draining but moisture retaining growing medium. I have a massive garden so the manure never gets dug...

Have you tried the Round up gel, better for those hard to get at weeds, you could get spray drift on to a precious plant.

I have a rose I grew from seed. My husband bought me some rose seeds in a tin, the idea being that you could then name it when it grew. Several germinated, and I have one large bush now with small pale pink flowers, not very spectacular but quite a nice idea. I didn't bother naming it though.

I grow cuttings in pots made of the bottom half of a clear pop bottle. If you put them against the sides you can see when the roots start to grow.Alternatively, if you pull slightly on the cutting you can tell whether there are roots anchoring it or whether it just slides right out.

I've been dithering whether to buy Rugosa 'Roseraie de L'Hay' below, that I've had my eye on since last autumn. It's where to put it that's the problem, I have the space but can't work out whether it will look right. I need to make my mind up soon!

Hi JJ, As insurance, you could use some of the top growth to make cuttings about 12-15" long, pencil thickness, take off leaves and stick in the ground where you want the rose to grow.
