    Acers always look dead in winter as they are dicidious, I would just cut off any brown dead looking tips and if you've just repotted it then I would'nt feed it for a couple of months, they don't...

    I agree palms do not have a big root system, I've seen them being moved in Jamaica, huge ones and they had big round root ball.

    No open to ground below so would soak away, would use filter pipe (holes in it) and maybe fill with stone?Dont really know if it is a good Idea or not.

    This is interesting as I have one in a pot . It's wintered outdoor last year but it wasn't much of a cold winter. Suppose if it does get a bit siberian as mentioned above, I could fleece mine. John
