The conifers are cupressus, probably macrocarpa varieties. Now that the Oak is way above them I don't think they are any threat. There shouldn't be any competition for water either, as the Oak is deep rooted and the conifers shallow rooted.

I grew a clementine plant in the greenhouse border some years ago with amazing sucsess for three or four years, then it got too big, and I found cutting it back only produced large amonts of leafy growth and no flowers. Then I moved the greenhouse and it was dead in two years. :(

There is no earthly reason why you can't just plant it in a large container. I have a live oak from Florida, grown on from a young seedling. Its now about 6ft high with lots of branches.

Thanks jazid. I was hoping I could save them, but I will have to chop them down as I want to plant some more fruit trees. I'll try and take a few cuttings so I won't feel so bad. I'll keep your advice on file so I know what to do in future. Thanks again, tailsey

I've read that it is best not to let them fruit in the first year to encourage a good establishment and to water regularly. However, don't excessively water between leaf fall and the buds opening.

What about a Rhus? Can be invasive and sucker all over the place if planted in the ground but should be OK in a large container.
