Sorry Debz, if you cut off the whole of the top because it was dead, the chances are that it is or is now. One way to see is to scrape some of the bark away at the base, and see what colour it is underneath. If its green there is some life still there - but whether it will regrow????.

Whatever you do, don't just trim them regardless, as if they're conifers, unless yews, you could end up with brown dead trees!! :eek: Photos would be really useful - if you follow the instructions on putting pics into your posts, you'll manage!! Good luck!

If your looking for a small tree with no root problems, you probably need to think about growing your tree in a container.Consider amelanciar, crab apple - the small purple leaved one, magnolia stellata, garyia - there are many.

I love lavateras ..i let mine grow wild till the wind damages them...my other half hates them as they drop buds..i went out once and when i got back he had chopped one down i could hardly bring myself to speak to him..we have one that drops buds on the drive it really winds him up..he keeps...

Don't know, DavieM - I've never ordered anything from them. I've looked in their catalogue, but I've always found what I'm after somewhere els. On the other hand - maybe that's an answer after all??

You've definitely done better than my friend who's in a similar position to you - he ahs to sort out his own pension, and doesn't get anything like that much - although he's done loads of training, and management courses too. But all this is really OT - sorry!

Stripped the blossom last year but let one olive develop - it grew to normal size and ripened. One tree is now covered with flower buds and on the other they are just starting to show. Hi Liz I took a couple of tip cuttings about 6 inches long the day before we flew home and wrapped them in a face flannel. When back home I cut them into sections about 3 inches, removed the bottom leaves and popped them into rooting gel in my propagator. The roots took quite a while to develop...

you must have a big garden and tolerant neighbours!

Alan I sow Cordyline Australis seed mid march with no special teatment just lightly pressed into the compost in a seed tray covered with glass. When just germinated (about 3 wks at 23c) I put a thin covering of fine vermiculite on top to prevent fungus etc. Hope this helps.

would it be worth pruning some of the branches back a bit once you've moved it, so the fresh growth grows in the usual way? Just a suggestion!

I don't have any experience with bonsai trees but for other plants I water well before going away then stand them on feet in a bath filled with about 2" of water. The base of the pot or container should be just above the water level. The idea is the water and cool shade keep the humidity up...
