I'm still undecided about the hedge, I think I might take a walk round a good local nursery at the weekend and see if that gives inspiration. I'm still keeping the Abelia in mind though.

Bore holes about half to one inch diameter at an angle of about 45 degrees and pour in a glyphosate based weed killer.Top up a few times and it should do the job.

Thanks, I thought it would be difficult. I did have some acer's in pots and occasionally a seed or two would root in the soil around the pots. I have a few kojo no mai in pots which are really nice. A nice tree shape, lots of leaves, lots of blossom, then lots of seeds which find themselves...

If you smoke as well that will lessen your odds ... for the rest your exposure is a lot less than people who actually worked with those materials ...

I did a Google and there is indeed a fungus - referred to as Laurel Leaf "Shot Hole". The fungus causes brown spots which eventually fall out of the leaves. Doesn't appear to damage the tree, per se. Best to clear up all fallen leaves - so that the fungus doesn't survive on them near the base...

I tend to cut the one I have on the allotment back in autumn, as Bilbo says, its the best time. Any other time and it will "bleed".

I may be wrong, but one thing to consider if you are severing tree roots is: balance. If you slice too many on one side, it is possible to destabilise the tree. Come strong winds in the right direction and .... either the tree will lean or worse, uproot. Much depends on how big the hole...

I find some sites give the height of the plant as the height after ten years, rather then the eventual height, which may be why there is such a disparity
