I will give it a go and see what happens. This is why I think gardening is so interesting. One thing works for one person but not another, a lot seems to be trial and error, but whatever the outcome, always a learning curve.

Our bay which is about 25 years old and now a big bush was really hammered by frost and snow this winter. I've just cut out all most of the branches with brown leaves and will let it sprout anew.

Thank you pete, and thanks for the helpful information you posted on the other thread.I've trimmed the soft branches back and protected the trunk with some mesh to stop the cats causing further damage. Now I'll just have to wait and hope we get a good summer for it!Jonathan

Not always the case. Roots will seek out water if there is a water defecit, going out far beyond the crown spread.I'd recommend leaving a tree or shrub in a pot if it's going to be that close to a wall or other structure. Hourses, with deep footings, can generally cope with nearby trees....
