    Hi wiseoldowl-try the following:
    click on START>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER>HARDWARE
and see if there is any exclamation mark anywhere.
If there is an exclamation mark on the "ethernet..."
which is the "driver card" also called "internal modem", than you need to change it.
(although it is possible thad disabling it and enabling it again fixes the problem)

It is a quite straightforward procedure.
The drive itself costs between 5 and 13 pounds and it slots in a long socket at the bottom somewhere.
If you look at the back of the tower, it is roughly positioned where you plug in your ethernet blue cable.

I would love to know how you get on with it and what is the problem...

 Sorry Woo, I haven't experienced that one, but had similar once.. So I did a Miriaflores said & went to the device manager & it did have a question mark by it.. So first I did a whole system scan, but no improvement.. So in the end I un-installed it & then re installed & that cured it for me... :thumb: Hope that helps..
