I switched on my computer tonight and suddenly realised that all was too quiet.
I wasn't getting any sounds from the speaker. Then I saw that the speaker icon was missing from the bottom right hand corner of the monitor screen so I checked the cables and re-tightened them to find the speaker icon had reappeared....but still no sound.:dunno: I take it my next step is to check the sound card is fixed in securely??? Suggestions would be appreciated:snork:

I shouldn't think it'd be your sound card, but it wouldn't hurt to help. While you're there you could use a hairdryer or air compressor to blow out the dust bunnies. It's surprising how dusty they get inside.

I would check your sound driver. if you have got speakers seperate from your pc, you should have a disc with the driver on.

Check your volume controls? Shut down and restart? Kick it?

'Control panel'->'Sounds and Audio Devices' will let you check/test a few different things.

Thanks Rusty and John. I've tried the control panel and testing the audio but all it says is "can you hear anything" when you go into test mode....you click on NO and it just stops testing and doesn't actually do anything else, no further steps, nothing!! I checked the volume control via the icon and also on the three items displayed... still nothing. I only cleaned it out with an air can a week or two ago so I know it's clean inside. I haven't checked the sound driver but on I will check that tomorrow as well as the sound card seating......I've got a desk top by the way...which does take a knock every now and then from a knee!!

Has anything else been installed recently, either hardware or software?

My thinking is that something has set your sound card to not be the default audio device.

You know the little speaker icon you mentioned? Right click that and then choose 'Playback devices' from the popup menu. You should see at least one entry, probably more. Each will have a the device name and a short status message with it, along with a little red or green icon. What you see depends on your setup, so unfortunately I can't tell you which one is right on your PC, but the names should give it away. Ensure that your sound card/speakers are set as the default playback device. If they aren't, then right click the appropriate entry, and on the resulting popup, choose 'Set as default device'.

Right, I did all that Clueless. I run Windows 7 [64 bit] so right clicking on the speaker icon gave me a window with various options. I tried all of them with no results and some being just dead ends with no actual changes available. However, in desperation I have just tried a Systems restore taking it back to a known safe date and...................I have got my sound back!!!:hapydancsmil:

on occasion the sound didn't work on mine because there is a light green plug which needs to be plugged in at the back of the tower in the light green socket and it was not plugged in.

You're right, Miraflores, and it was one on the things I checked just in case I had disturbed something if I had accidently knocked the computer with my knee. I've got an idea it might have a been from one of the automatic updates the computer gets daily as suggested by Clueless.:snork:

I think the latest Windows 7 update has been going round busting things. Lo and behold, my main laptop no longer connects reliably to wi-fi since they rolled out the latest set of updates. Unfortunately rolling back hasn't worked in my case. I'm here on my old Ubuntu laptop now that connected without hesitation on boot.

Yeah, the Windows 7 updates can be a pain in the bum. I've lost bits of software when switching on after an update and Windows has "reconfigured" the computer. I don't I can blame Windows updates for the latest problem I had though. I don't use Wi-fi as, for me, it's not secure enough. Good old Ubuntu and Open source.:snork:
