Get a load of 'pop-up' shops in? Lower the rents and let them out on very short term lets and have a festival of alternative shopping. Artists, craftspeople, makers, food producers, surely there are a lot of people who would like to showcase what they do if they could afford it? Invite the school students of Hull to take on a shop for a week, that would be a really genuine bit of work experience.

They need to get some employers to invest in the town. No jobs, no money, no shops. Maybe the City of Culture thing will help that process along?

Sorry Madahhlia you'll need the GC time-travelling helicopter, I was going back to the 70s. Both factories have since closed. There was a time we could buy fish freshly landed on the docks but not since we lost the Cod War and Ted Heath gave away all our fishing rights. Now-a-days the trawler fleet is scrapped and the docks have been filled in and yuppified. @Lolimac might know if there are a few remnants of the fishing fleet :)

I think it's all History now @JWK ....as you say the Cod war put paid to what was left of the fishing fleet...i am ignorant to the fishing side of Hull as my family lent more to farming on the wolds...although my Dad was a ships rigger at one point when the port was thriving....if i'm not mistaken i think Grimsby is the port for fish these days...
