Meta ?

I've got a facebook page which I look at sometimes because a friend insists on sending me messages on it, instead of sending emails which I prefer.
Yesterday it would not let me see anything until I agreed to let something called 'Meta' use my 'content' to supply me with adverts.

I don't know what that means so could someone please explain it ? I don't know if I want this 'Meta' thing to watch every word I write ... not that I write much into facebook anyway, it's mostly messages to this friend, but it's rather unsettling and I wonder if it's it safe ?

Another thing is I don't see any adverts anyway so I don't know what the thing was on about, but I did allow it to see my 'content' because I could not see anything else until I did.

 

Meta is the company that owns Facebook, run by Mark Zuckerberg, @Michael Hewett. Meta can see all your content anyway and track you about the net. What this message may mean is that it is sharing your content with advertising partners, so they can decide what ads to show each person. Lots of apps and websites do this.

Really anything you put anywhere on the internet is accessible to many. That's why most sites and apps are free to use. You are the raw material for their income stream.

Personally, I don't use FB as I object to Zuckerberg's business model. Same with Amazon. But everything I do use is basically doing the same, so my ethical stance is pretty pointless where the bigger picture is concerned.

 

I suddenly had one of those messages the other day Michael, after years of using FB, I assume it's just procedure when they make changes.
