Good morning I need a new Border spade due to the fact that a I lent mine to a neighbour who didn't return it (Long story) I would like a Made in England spade but have just seen thiswhich amazes yours truly, could anyone recommend one please.

No-one really makes solid forged forks and spades in the UK. In either carbon or stainless.

If you see any spade or fork labelled "made in the UK" - be aware this does not apply to the metal parts!

By law, fitting handles and painting the steel now qualifies as made in Britain - sad but true.

I always try them out in store Woo.....i.e. I simulate digging, feel the balance etc. Also look for stainless steel as they make digging much easier and cleaner; there are some very bendy lightweight stainless steel ones out there so check for quality here too.
Cant remember the name but it came a few years back with a 10 year warranty....a joy to use. Not convinced by the "name" these days anyway
So, I suggest going with an open mind, test the spade, check if it truly is made in England. :)

Would you consider a Made in Northern Ireland spade? Patterson's Spade Mill in Co Antrim belongs to the National Trust and is still forging them in traditional style: Patterson's Spade Mill

They sell them too I think - at a price - but I can't find a link for that!

Otherwise mine too is a Spear and Jackson and has done good service for a number of years. But I also agree that it's one of those things where you need to go along to a real-life store and try handing a few. As with cooking pans you need to find the one that suits you when it comes to length of handle, balance, etc.
