I was given this beautiful plant today for my birthday. Unfortunately it didn't come with a label!

Just googled azalea and I think you may be right @Macraignil . Oh well, that won't survive up here!

If you have a cold green house or porch they are well worth keeping over winter.
Unusual to see them this late in the year in flower.
These pot plants are fairly hardy and in a sheltered position they often over winter planted outdoors.

It is a Rhododendron...one more commonly called Azalea.
They are forced into flower out of season to sell as gifts.
It will hate the hot spell...flowers may not last very long in a warm room.

They love shade, cool temps and rain.
After flowering plant it in the garden.
Should be fine in County Antrim
It probably won't flower in 2021 but should flower in spring 2022

Silver surfer.... are you saying it should be indoors? I put it outside! As for a hot spell.... the last sunny day we had was back in May. If it loves rain and cool temps, I might be onto a winner!

            So sorry to confuse you.
Normally Rhod's/Azaleas are given as gifts in mid winter/or spring for Mothering Sunday ...they have come straight from a very cosy warm green house..probably in Holland.
In full flower they need to be kept indoors...shock of cold outdoor winter temps would instantly kill the flowers.

Here in UK yesterday was a heat wave! Houses will be hot...too hot for Rhodo in full flower.
You have done exactly the correct thing to put it outside.
            Keep it well watered
After flowers die back I suggest you plant it straight into your garden.
            Enjoy!

It looks like...Rhododendron/ Azalea Kermesina Rose

@Silver surfer thanks for the info..... would it be alright left in a pot. I've tried growing azaleas and rhods before and I don't think they are very fond of heavy clay soil that regularly gets water logged. Apart from vibernum and brachiosaurus, there's not many plants that like my garden.
