    Saw some water chestnuts in Morrisons today I was wondering has any one here tried to grow from them and if so how did you grow them and how succsesful

    I can see you're not going to fall for that old Chestnut Stu:heehee:

    Seriously, sounds a good plan. Never knew you could get fresh ones here.

    Looks like a big bucket would do the job.

      Thanks for the link ziggy I will give it a try hopefully they have some there still on my next visit they had quite a few differnt tropical roots including tumeric so will give them all ago and quite cheap

      Yes stumorphmac I did few years back , but I started them in a fish tank as they need lights and worm....they start really slow , I moved them in my pond in June and by September my whole pond was cover with them....nice plant if it wouldn`t be so invasive.

      Just wondering were these water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) or water hyacyinth (Eichornia crassipes ) the one with blue flowers I know this is invasive

      I think there are 2 king of water chestnut sold in supermarket......
      the one I grown was Trapa natans ....got it from an asian store and it`s a floting plant ......then you got the american Eleocharis dulcis that actually grow in soil ......they are different shape.
      about the water hyacyinth , I had that as well ,very invasive, but really hardy to keep alive in winter as it need lots of light , but easy to find in garden center around May/june.
