Sort of agree @clueless1 but believe the malpractice was started by the likes of Lehman Bros and then our lot just joined the gravy train.Hell I have it on very very good authority that RBS was actually bankrupt and would have gone to the wall without intervention. The intervention was not immediately forthcoming either and we ended up having to physically move cash out of the bank the afternoon before it became general knowledge that the bank was on the brink. I repeat what I said in a previous post" I wonder when or maybe if ever we as human beings will ever learn to put greed and envy aside". The only reason I mentioned the 2008 crash was I get the impression that some think all our problems have been caused by The EU and now we will be blissfully the masters of our own destiny. I don't think that is the case at all.

I must be a simpleton. We have NAFTA - North American Free Trade Agreement - which I must say has not done us any favours as much of our automotive industry has now set up plants in Mexico to exploit cheap labour - but it is a trade agreement.

So I really don't understand as I had thought Brexit is to separate matters of state from the business of trade? I would think that would be super?

I think that we should blame Canada. We haven't picked on them since 1867! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Well, I don't think anyone here has been able to understand it all, Lori:dunno::heehee: I don't think NAFTA, I could be wrong, has required Canada to give up any Sovereign powers and pass legislation that affects your own personal life.:dunno:
The EU developed from several trade organisations and that was what the UK joined the EU solely for.............trade, and trade only. Unfortunately, the EU mutated insidiously into an organisation with a political life of it's own beyond the countries it was representing, and an agenda for sucking those countries into a Federalisation that would give it, a non elected organisation, political, economic powers over and above those of the countries.
So imagine.Lori, NAFTA changing from being able to just affect and make trade agreements between America and Canada, and instead have the power to have the overall political and legal powers to pass legislation, say, for not just Canada, but the USA, Mexico, South America, [just to get the number of countries approximately equal], while also inventing an entirely new currency and saying that all the countries have to get rid of their own currencies and use only the invented one, that basically and generally is what has happened in Europe. So there you are in Canada being gradually enmeshed in more and more politically motivated, and not trade motivated, legislation designed to lessen and eventually kill Canada's ability to govern itself by an unelected organisation that is not even a country........wanna join the EU??:dunno::snorky:

I didn't like the change from Creosote to "Creocote" either, Mowgley, but to be honest, it looks the same, smells the same, and tastes the same:dunno::heehee:

Can someone explain to me what Obama was wittering on about regarding trade deals?

As I understand it, the EU hasn't got a trade deal with the USA, but trade still goes on.

So my question is, why do we have to have a trade deal in order to trade??

Introduction of common standards (ie. those of the US which are lower) and ability of US companies to sue EU governments where their policies have negative impact on profits. Well out of it.:blue thumb:

TTIP goes much further than just agreeing tariffs. You can't read the TTIP as its being agreed behind closed doors. You can see a draft on Wikileaks.

I heard on the radio that the first ever eu summit without UK representation is happening in a few days.

That's interesting, considering we are currently still an active member.
