I don't think it's chestnut Pete, the leaf markings are more prominent.

Thank you all for your help nevertheless! I guess I'll have to grow it a bit more and report back. I've had some personal issues the past few months so gardening hasn't been top of the agenda, aside from watering, so I'm not sure where this had grown from during that time. I think it might have been a seedling from a pot I discovered.

I shall post another photo in this thread in a month or so when perhaps the leaves will show some differences!

Magnolia trees I've just googled images appear quite waxy? I don't think mine is. Sadly (I'd love if it were a magnolia!).

This probably won't help at all but got another photo of it yesterday. The one in my first post was ya few months old. Anyway tried to get a leaf shot...

I wonder if I've cracked this... is it perhaps a Bird Cherry (Prunus padus)?

                      Hi Ben,

I wondered about Prunus, but I don't like guessing. I only suggest something if I'm sure.

PS... How are the Salvias coming along ?

Thanks Anthony, judging by the pictures of Bird Cherry Tree leaves I think it certainly looks like the culprit. Perhaps spread by a passing bird?

Salvias are generally doing OK thanks! I didn't pay them enough attention (I was away from home a bit due to other issues, sadly) and subsequently a few perished due to lack of water.

I think they were 2 Hayloft ones, I forget which ones. Have the labels at home. One or two didn't flower either, sadly but are alive. I was pretty gutted at the casualties when it was out of my hands, but c'est la vie. I will check this week. Those cuttings of Clematis suffered the same fate, sadly, sorry. Although I do still have 1 Royal Bumble cutting out of 3 which survived which I plan on sending to you! Probably this weekend if you still want it?

                      How was your Salvia year?
