That's nothing. Just last night I dreamed it snowed. Only the snow was just a cover. It was really the disassembled building blocks of an alien race of tiny advanced beings that started assembling themselves and sophisticated post industrial colonies. I thought they were hostile so I melted them, then their goddess came to punish me for it. It was the girl from Boney M. We spoke diplomatically and I explained I'd mistaken them for an invasion force, and they'd have melted anyway come spring, and it was all a massive misunderstanding. Thus an interdimensional major diplomatic incident was averted.

@wiseowl I wouldn't really know but I would guess, knowing your history, that you are one of the protagonists in the first picture. :)

How come that in the days of Darcy and Elizabeth if the masters of the stately homes were away from the house for any length of time then visitors were allowed a free access to wander around the house and gardens but these days we have to pay for that privilege:nonofinger::heehee:

Yin and yang. One can't exist without the other. Seemingly opposing but complementary forces.

A lot of tech we take for granted has its roots in a perceived need to be ready to kill each other. Even the Internet on which this discussion is happening is built on top of darpanet, basically a US led NATO initiative designed to ensure that even in the event of a full nuclear exchange with the Soviet union, a resilient comms infrastructure would survive thus enabling a coordinated response. After the last cold war, DARPA made a very clever move. They opened the network up to private investors and so the Internet was born, and will be maintained and extended by many factions in both public and private sectors.

You mentioned enhanced safety in cars. Only necessary because humans make mistakes. Some more than others. People don't drive within the bounds of their ability or the conditions, so technology has to mitigate silly mistakes that could otherwise prove fatal. But now people take it for granted. I know plenty of people for example that don't know the fancy footwork of preventing a full lockup if their ABS was to fail.

It's all human nature. We credit ourselves with more intelligence than we deserve. At the end of the day, we're just a slightly more evolved monkey.

Turning back time.......I would make it safe for children to run and play outside again. I would send sex offenders and child molesters to an island from which they could never leave. I remember going outside and only coming back when it was time to eat dinner. We could roam the neighborhood at will, never feeling danger except from our own stupid stunts, like seeing how long we could hold a lit firecracker before it blowing up. Now parents and children are fearful of real life monsters that are definitely out there.

In the UK at least, if it is more dangerous for kids now than it used to be, it is only because adults dare not offer help or advice to kids that might be putting themselves in danger, in case they get accused of being a paedo.

When I was a kid, it was normal to stay out for hours, often quite far from home. But then it was also normal for a stranger to tell you off if you did something stupid, or pick you up, take you indoors and clean you up if you fell and scraped yourself, or even put you in their car and take you home if you told them you were lost.

Nowadays, because we're all axe wielding murderous peados until proven otherwise, a kid is less likely to trust a helpful stranger, and an adult is far less likely to be a helpful stranger.
