It's hard to believe but today is the first anniversary of the passing of David Bowie.

        @Linz
Lee Marvin reached No 1 in the charts with it in 1970. Maybe that was a significant year for you.

The song was written by Lerner and Loewe for the stage show Paint your Wagon, 19 years before the film came out.

I went to see the film's debut in London and was kicked out halfway through because of a bomb scare. We were told to retain our ticket stubs for a future viewing. Yes, I did get to see it all the way through second time around. :)

It was the first film to be shown in London in a cinema where the back row had twin seats. :dbgrtmb:

Had to try it out  :snorky:

I remember him well! Especially loved "Where do you go to, my lovely"
Strangely, I never knew he even *had* brothers, let alone that they were also in the industry; and yet, as soon as I clicked on the links you kindly provided ... I knew their songs immediately!

A lovely trip down memory lane for me; thank you.

Following on from my post about the songs in the film 'Paint your Wagon', the most popular song was 'They Call The Wind Maria'. It was sung in the film by Harve Presnell who was a fairly well known actor and singer who had leading roles in film and on stage. He was a classically trained singer and also sang in operas. He won a Golden Globe in 1965.

An interesting fact abut the song was that the name of 'Maria' given to the wind came from a book by George Rippey Stewart published in 1941. It was the inspiration for meteorologists to start naming Pacific storms after women's names (the book was called 'Storm').

Not quite so interesting is that Mariah Carey was named after the song! :snork:

                        Was that 1889?? :roflol:

At the moment I am listening to the third series of Radio 4's drama serial The Corrupted............

                        Episode 2, Series 3, GF Newman's The Corrupted - BBC Radio 4

Top quality drama and maybe worth catching up on even if you missed the first two series.

The story behind the writing of Universal Soldier. Buffy Sainte-Marie (Canadian) wrote it in 1964 and recorded it the same year. It didn't become a hit until Donovan recorded it the following year in England. It then became a hit in the U.S.

I've still got my original 1964 recording by Buffy :dbgrtmb:

As a songwriter she has written a lot of songs for other well known performers.

She received a BAFTA, Academy Award, a JUNO Award and a Golden Globe for this song

She also has over a dozen Honorary Doctorates.
