    Hello

Should I paint it? Give it a shave? Hang things from it? Grow something up it?

    It's a Trachycarpus fortunei about 15ft high

Assuming it is still alive, it's possible to strip a Trachycarpus' trunk - remember it's a one off - there's no going back once done!

Stock image I found on google:

It would be a great place for nesting boxes on the shady side, and with windows and doors strategically placed, would make a wonderful block of flats for the fairy population, especially if there are any children in the vicinity .....although there may be goblins lurking in all that ''hair''..I think you can find goblins and the like on eBay.

I've seen one with a stripped trunk, it looks wonderful at first because it's shiny. However I believe that stripping the trunk reduces its hardiness.

I like the idea of carving it but it is alive. So no. Maybe there's a way of sticking something onto it though.

            Any ideas for lighting effects?

I've got one just outside my conservatory window.
To me it looks as it is supposed to look, I've come across stripping them but it's not natural, as far as I'm concerned.

To me that hairy trunk is part of the strange ness / exotic look, and a reason to grow them.
