Our appliances come from Argos. That's probably why they don't last very long.

We are only just seeing Maytag over here, thanks to Costco arriving in the UK, so I don't have any personal experience of them, but they do get a good name

Wow! That's a lot of money but I know Canada is an expensive place to live in general, my daughter lives there. I'll be paying about £700 for mine. I've not heard of Maytag's, I don't think they are available here unless they're under a different name.

I shouldn't think it's the retailer Jack but the make of the appliance that makes a difference.

We've all been there - it gets better with time, I promise. I find AO very hard to beat nowadays - you can get top drawer products, delivery is usually the following day or a day of your choice, and they also do finance if money is a bit tight. Through time, you will break the cycle - the first step is taking that leap to buying something that you consider to be 'expensive' :blue thumb:

We tried our local appliance retailer once. They wanted to sell us an expensive item. They weren't interested in showing us the cheaper ones. Sadly, needs must. We like Argos because we can spread the cost with no penalty payments.

AO will give you exactly the same @Jack Sparrow - and they have a better range than Argos. Don't get me wrong, Argos are actually pretty good in a lot of ways, and since Sainsburys have bought them out, they have improved - - I got a peach of a torque wrench and a socket set from them a few months back, and they were of a quality that I would not normally have expected to find in Argos.

A few weeks back, we bought a computer chair for our daughter from them, and it too was really nice quality. As @Sheal alludes to, it is the brand you buy rather than the place you buy it.

My old Miele was seventeen years old when it had to be scrapped. I bought it because I was wearing out washing machines in just over two years, a minimum of ten washes a week when my children still lived at home. Making the comparison it was well worth the money in the long run. When I buy the new one there's a possibility it'll out live me!

Little known fact - you can take a metal implement to the surface of a Miele appliance and it will not scratch it as they do not paint their machines, but rather their outer shells are hardened enamel.

A couple of months ago my washing machine died on me. I called a "local" trader (approx. 20 miles away) to see if/when he could call to repair it. He wouldn't be in my area until 4 or 5 days later. I explained that it was too long a wait but thank you anyway. Within 10 minutes, he had called me back to say he could be here at 11am - unfortunately I had to be in *his* area to take my dog for treatment at our vets; but, my son would be home so I agreed to that time.

A while later, son called to tell me no chance of a repair, it was totally gone! But, if we wanted to, he had a selection of new machines in his shop which, if we bought one, he would be able to deliver it that day, install it, remove the old one and deduct the £20 he had charged for coming out this morning.

We were in the area anyway and marking time while my dog was being X-rayed so we popped along to his shop. His daughter ran the shop end of the business and couldn't have been more helpful. She explained the capabilities of each machine we showed an interest in, the pro's and con's of each for our circumstances and we eventually settled on one.

By the time we returned home in the evening: voila! Up and running new machine  That man had driven 80 miles in total just for *my* benefit. When Mr "M" looked up the machine online ... it was £30 cheaper than those! How that man made a profit in business I will never know, but I sing his praises to local people every chance I get. I would never get that level of service from any of the Big Boys ;)

Since the demise of Comet left amazingly very little high street / retail park , white goods shops. A very small shop near where I once lived , partnered with Euronics and is now quite big with good prices and stock . When our washing machine went belly up we called them. They explained all the shop stock they had , checked the specs on t'internet and bought it. She said they would deliver that evening if urgent . We said tomorrow was fine , they arrived took the old machine , installed and test ran the new one . Superb service , which I don't think I would of got from the other choice of Currys.

The only appliance retailer we have here is Curry's and like many others I try to avoid them. I'll have to drive 30 miles to the next nearest retailer, other than that buy online which is looking likely at the moment, for both washing machine and dryer.

Your machine will be fine it's way under the weight that would stress a floor old or modern.

I did that drive today. The shop was shut! Yes, I should have phoned first but I naturally assumed that a shop on a busy high street would be open on a Saturday. :doh:It looks like I will be buying online.

@Fat Controller do AO use couriers to deliver or their own vehicles and employees please? I ask because I need someone to install the machine for me.

They use their own vehicles & staff, and they will install for you too. I have had nothing but positive experiences with them :blue thumb:
