My knowledge of valves is very limited, although I would like to work on them more - I am a product of the transistor age, but even I am amazed at just how far things have moved on in the past 30 years.

Thankfully, some of the common failure modes hold true - always be suspicious of electrolytic capactitors (capactitors in general to be honest), and always look, listen, feel and smell when working on something petulant; never discount vibration or movement, and never underestimate thermal dynamics; and always, always, always, remove the component from circuit and test as far as you can before deciding on its fate.

The downside of modern electronics is lead-free solder and solder pastes, particularly on BGA chips - - utter garbage as far as I am concerned. I always use rosin cored, tin/lead solder - it gives far superior reliability, and the amount of lead involved (and therefore the risks) are beyond miniscule.

Well I'm getting used to the windows 1709 version but it's also made my laptop a lot faster :dbgrtmb:

I've got a kindle fire HD 7 I've not used in a while, so I thought for doing a friend a quick email I went and brought this case and keyboard and I was pleased the kindle fitted and blue tooth linked up quickly :yay:

Hi @ARMANDII it was the edge browser yesterday from stopping me viewing the video you added, so i do apologise mate:sad:

I went all through my laptop checking the flash player, signing in and out of google, anyway did no end so i reloaded chrome and bingo straight on to viewing video's.

Apparently Edge plays up with youtube and stops the viewing after so long...hubby was reading about it :)

I've never had a day like today one thing after another :dunno:

I'm naffed off with Windows 10.

                  Much preferred Windows 8.

On my vintage Epson printer, I used to be able to put photos on the plate and it would only copy them to my laptop, (with Epson Photo Impression, which no longer works), not the naffin' white background as well as I get now with Epson Photo Quicker.

I've a separate CD writer and a floppy disc reader, which were quite cheap to buy a couple of years ago and Windows 10 won't recognise either.

Hi @Doghouse Riley i had windows 8.1 before windows 10 and the main thing they've added is extra apps but it does cause some problems, sorry to hear how it affected your (with Epson Photo Impression, which no longer works)...i just don't know why they keep adding versions..pure madness :)

I'm no lover of W10 but had it on my Laptop which I use solely for Astronomy software and images. I have W7 on my Desktop PC and would rather have that than any other. When W10 first came out and they were offering free downloads of it I held off for several months. Then a bought a Laptop with W8 and that came with the offer of a free "upgrade" to W10.....so I thought why not:dunno: The Laptop froze within the hour and, foolishly, I had also downloaded W10 onto my Desktop which was using W7......that froze within minutes. I eventually had to go to the local Computer Geek who reinstalled W8 onto the Laptop and W7 back onto my Desktop......at a cost of £40 per machine.:wallbanging::gaah: W10 is just a name for a Operating System that will be, and has, been updated so that, behind the scenes, it will no longer look like the original W10.:coffee::snorky:

@ARMANDII It costs you money in the end to get it established :dunno:....it came up on my windows 8.1 when they was first offering it free...checked it out first and then reserved it..waited months and my laptop downloaded it straight away and it's updated several versions since but it messed my hubbies right up and he as a friend who's technical and did it for him.

Funny enough it did updates last night...i need to check what's been installed :snorky:

My PC is down at the moment and is in hospital . Tom took it away yesterday and said it looks as though it may be either the hard drive or the memory. It's about 13 years old and runs on W7. I don't want it upgraded at all (Tom says he runs almost all his machines on W7 and agrees with me). All data and software is backed up so not too bothered.

Tom says that some of my hardware and some of the software won't run on W10.

I'm working on a very old W98 laptop at the moment - good but slow.

                              No W10 for me. :nonofinger:

If you get a new lappie you'll find it works with w10 really well. It's just the old legacy stuff which doesn't (some older peripherals mainly)
