On International Women's day last week GiantVeg.com ran a competition on their facebook page to try and encourage more women to grow giant veg.. I entered saying my pumpkin was no bigger than a grapefruit last year and I happened to be 1 of 5 winners!

Variety I won is Jasper x Meier. Anyone Grown it before?

Can't find my Dill's Atlantic seeds from last year.. must be a sign! The other variety I'll be growing is Goosebumps. Fingers crossed I'll have something to carve this year.

They are the grower names, there should be some numbers (weights) with those. But they will be atlantic giants for the variety.

They are 2 plants that where crossed to grow another pumpkin, the pumpkin which your seed came from.

Lets say Zigs grew the pumpkin, it could be a ..

          Ziggs 100 (Jasper248 x Meier762)

Your seed coming from the Ziggs 100

          Steve...:)

You can check out pumpkin genetics here Giant Pumpkin Statistics and Grower Resource Beni Meier is a prolific pumpkin grower and holds the current world record.

The 548.5 Jaser was the weight of the pumpkin that your seed came from and was grown in 2013, the pumpkin was grown on a plant from a seed from Beni Meiers 1694, it was polinated by a male flower from a 1634 werner.

They keep these records to identify strains of pumpkin that grow well and by doing so they are making them bigger and bigger.

It's probably enough to say that your seed has decent pedigree, you'll need to sand the edges of that seed just to very barely, your just breaking the gloss or sheen on the seed so water can get in, stay away from the pointy end though!

              Steve...:)

Thanks again Steve. I noticed the seeds edges are rather raised and hard so will do that and stay away from pointy end

That website is pretty interesting it's like an Ancestry for pumpkins!

In typical Linz fashion, I lost my one giant seed.

Annnd... I effed up and got my squash and other pumpkin mixed up and have been picking pumpkins thinking they're god damn squash...

                              Well done Linz, well done..
