I asked what a plant was in a plant sales shop in Northumberland recently and was impressed by the assistant getting his phone out and taking a picture of it and then showing me it's correct identity. It was a non native flowering plant. I decided to get a similar App. I have tried two different ones. Plant Snap and iplant, neither of which work very well. I have had several known plants wrongly identified when experimenting with them.
Does anyone use a reliable app that knows European plants? I am particularly interested in British wild flowers/weeds, which do not always look exactly how they are shown in books.

    Thanks

That is true of course and I have used the service several times but unfortunately I cannot ask those sort of questions if I am out and about. An app on the phone is useful.

After seeing this interesting Thread started by stony I thought about using an App
before but it never got any further, anyway after a bit of research I installed a App
            called PlantNet Plant Identification.

            https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.plantnet&hl=en_GB&rdid=org.plantnet&pli=1

You can use it to take pictures and ID the plant or select a picture on your phone / PC
I uploaded 3 pictures, the app ID the first two correctly (Aichemilla & Cistus) the last
photo was I a plant I saw at our local Village Fete but didn't know the name, the app ID the plant as possibly being Sisyrinchium, if anyone wants to ID the 3rd one as I don't know if Sisyrinchium is correct?

There might be other apps out there that are better then PlantNet but it does
seems easily quite easy to use :)

As a test I just installed the first app I could find in the store, PlantSnapp. It suggested my Dahlia was a Peony so that app is useless and is consigned to the bin. There were plenty of others to try - as intel says PlantNet gets high ratings on there.

                  Hi John
Thanks for the ID, do you know that plant behind the Sisyrinchium please, the one with the
purple flowers which look like a small Hibiscus

Just had a thought @intel you could take a close up of just that purple flowered plant and use your PlantNet app to identify it. I'd be interested to know what it thinks.

That's good intel - looks like it is accurate for you. I just installed PlantNet and its done much better than the previous app I tried. It recognised my Dahlia!

I’m waiting for the day when I can buy a pair of binoculars whereby when I look at a bird when out and about it will come up with what bird it is for my list as I have lost count of the amount of hours we have sat in a hide trying to identify one particular bird because of a slight variation in its feather markings:snorky:

When we visited Titchwell RSPB reserve last year the volunteer warden showed us 60 photos of Ruffs (yes there is such a bird:biggrin:) where the markings were all different for the same species of bird because some of them can be juveniles in the eclipse of changing from a youngster into an adult or going from winter plumage into summer plumage:biggrin:

Mr Kandy has an App on his phone where he logs all the birds we have seen so far this year which saves him having to write them all down in a note book:snorky:

As an aside, one of the chaps on our allotments showed me a photo this morning of a moth he and his wife spotted in their garden Yesterday and asked me if I could identify it.Of course I could because there is as far as I know only one moth that has a skull on the back of its head so identified is as a Deaths Head Hawkmoth and I didn’t need an App for that:snorky: Evidently they shouldn’t been seen about until at least August or so he was told by Dorset moth people he sent the photo to...

I didn't expect such a show of interest in my request for a useful app. I am now going to download the PlantNet one and see if it's any Improvement on the others I have tried.

                                Thanks for the suggestions.
