Has anybody seen or tried to have a garden that sports yellow flowers, and only yellow flowers of different varieties that are just all over the place so that when the sun shines down it's like a gleaming garden of el dorado?

I feel like its a cool idea and I challenge someone to do it =p

      Interesting Cariqua :)

An El Dorado garden and yellow flowers! I grow helenium El Dorado and it sports yellow flowers. Lots of them all summer long. Meant to be in your el dorado garden? :)

@KFF I'm afraid I haven't the experience nor my own garden to try it, but I would love to see it!
What do you mean by cottage garden style of planting?

@Verdun Well due to their name they would just have to be the main feature, they would look great bordering a pond filled with.....custard? nah that's going too far now! :snorky:

Cottage style is basically just having a huge variety of plants/flowers....
Different colours, heights all mixed in together .

The closest I can come to the el dorado style is Dandelions in the Spring. I have carpets of them here, but they are the same shade. I do have some Celandines that flower the same time as the Dandelions, which are also yellow and different shade. Got a few Buttercups too.

There is the Cottage Garden at Sissinghurst Castle, though it includes orange as well as yellow. Unlike the rest it was designed not by Vita Sackville-West but by her husband, Harold Nicolson.

There's an article here about its restoration which gives some details of the plantings: All change in the Cottage Garden

Could be a fantastic garden ClareG :)

Doronicums, anthemis E. C Buxton, europys pectinatus, argyranthemum Jamaica Primrose ( a more robust and older, but still the best I think, variety, dahlias like Clare de Lune and Yellow Honka, achillea Moonshine, osteospermum Voltage Yellow ( proving quite hardy) yellow gazanias, yellow echinaceas and loads more yellows. In winter there are yellow hellebores, daffs, etc if you wanted to maintain a yellow garden throughout the year.

I like the addition of orange though ClareG.....kniphofia Mango, heleniums like Moreheim Beauty, leonotis leonorus, geums Totally Tangerine and Firestorm, echinacea Marmalade, etc.

Yellow and orange would be a "wow" garden but sunshades may be needed :)

Hi @Carlqua I have tried to create a border with flowers only in the range cream through to orange (with plenty of yellow). But I have also included purple/brown foliage to contrast eg cotinus, carex comans bronze, along with yellow foliage eg a yellow leaved hypericum, choisya sundance, catalpa aurea... That gives it a bit more substance

Sounds excellent CarolineL :) Like the cream through orange concept.....Stunning! :)

Agree about the use of purple/brown foliage.....here I also use those you mentioned plus acteas, physocarpus Diablo, astilbe Shogun, dahlias like Twynings After Eight and Bishop of Llandaff, eucomis Sparklng Burgundy and Dark Star, black heucheras, pennisetum Rubrum, persicaria Red Dragon, cannas like Tropicanna Black and Durban. :)

Hi @Verdun thank you! Unfortunately the idea is better than its current execution (lack of continuity of bloom)... And an annoying number of plants with purple foliage have pink flowers :snorky:

I usually remove flowers CarolineL......keeps foliage pristine too. You are right about the pink flowers though but many acteas have white flowers. However, the cream through orange theme has gripped me, so I will try it out. Thanks :)
