My daughter brought back a pod from the tree below. She couldn't get a better photo of the flowers. The pod is 46 cm long and the seeds are approx. 2cm long! Any ideas please? UnidentifiedTreeSm.jpg

Ah yes, I didn't realise delonix was in fabaceae... and the one she found did not seem to be very 'flamboyant' since not many flowers. But I'll have a go with the seeds anyway.
            Thanks all.
How can I set this as 'solved'?

Hold up mate ;) ….I think how climates as bad as Lanzarote at the moment...if only my bottle brushes would have survived the winter :cry3: they would have cherished this heat.

I think Delonix is quite possible for a couple of years or so as a foliage pot plant, with a winter temp min of 15C at night.:)

Gail that is always the problem in the UK when growing tender plants, often they can take our climate for 11 months of the year, but that one month can finish off a plant that has taken many years to grow.
It's the problem with being in such a place where we are tantalisingly close to where many tender plants are able to grow, but one night of hard frost can wipe them out.

I've grown Delonix in the past as a greenhouse plant but it gets too big too soon, shame.
I wouldn't call it tropical as I have seen mature trees in Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus along with Plumeria

Pete I totally agree with you mate after seeing hard frost and cold weather take them and I put quite a few years into maturing them well besides keeping them healthy and I know I would state this to anybody who liked them...leave well alone they love hot temps only ;)

Well, not quite my thinking, as I like to push boundaries, but always with the thought in the back of my mind that one day I'll lose the gamble.;)

I'm with @pete on this - I'll try growing anything. If it doesn't survive, no worries. If it does, then I've found something new! I've got mimosas flowering at the moment in the border, grown from seed. If they survive the winter again, fine. But if they go next year, at least I've had some enjoyment from them.
