Solanum Tree Blown Over

We have a solanum tree or potato vine at the bottom of the garden and this morning when I went down the garden I found it had blown over.It is still in the ground but what happened was when we planted it about six years ago we fixed a trellis to the fence and trailed the branches which were small then into the trellis.Obviously with the wind last night the trellis came away from the fence.So what do we do I suggested we prune it down to make it manageable so we can push it back up and put a wooden stake in to hold it.My wife would like to move it to another part of the garden but I think that would not work and even if it did it would have to be pruned right down to enable us to dig it up and carry it.Has anyone got any ideas.Thanks.

 

Good morning Paul. This plant can be a bit of a thug! If it were mine I would cut it right back and tie the new growth back in as it regrows - as it will very readily. The plant is best if it is kept under control. ........like men

 

I have just cut it right back and ended up with four wheelbarrows wood to get rid of luckily there is a skip on my allotment site which will be taken away tomorrow and I was able to put in on there.Not sure how to support it as it is right next to the fence so no room to put a stake behind to tie it to and it is leaning away from the fence so has to be pulled back towards the fence.

 

Paul, how about two stakes - one either side and attach some wire trellis (wouldn`t cost too much) between for your solanum to grow on to - even if the wire trellis was in front of the plant, it would give it some support
