Mr S has just done that Freddy :) and across the makes they are all fairly equal apart from Dunlops which are a fair bit lower in decibels.

I think Aunt Sally might have something to say about that. :snorky:

Thanks all! This has now thrown a spanner in the works. Mr. S and I have three in the running now, the Avons, Conti's and Dunlops which also have a good write up. The thing is we can't compare them to our current tyres which are Michelins (came with car), they are also directional which makes steering skittish.

If the difference is only 1db @Sheal , I wouldn’t worry about it. A workmate replaced his Continentals with Avon’s (same car as mine) and noticed a difference, which bears out the 4db difference. As pointed out, tyres that need replacing do get noisier.

Dunlops are sticky, but wear hellishly fast in my experience - had them on the Passat; can be fun with the right amount of power and the right roads, but I personally wouldn't.

I like Michelin too - but, as you have pointed out, they are guilty for tramlining and the price of them is just scary. Contis are best in my opinion, but Avons are a damned fine second, and going by my experience with the ZZ5 on the Qashqai, I would say that you would run out of bottle before running out of grip with your Juke @Sheal.

One other that I like, although not a common tyre, is Falken - really sticky, quiet but wear a bit fast, so not to be recommended for you.

I agree Freddy, it won't make a lot of difference.

Thanks FC. Okay we're down to two now, Avon's and Conti's, any thoughts on Goodyear's, there's just pence in the difference in price between these and the Conti's?

Had Goodyear EfficientGrip on my previous Jag - OK, but suffered badly with sawtooth wear making them noisy (on a par with Pirelli, so not terrible in noise terms), but in fairness that could also have been down to the rear alignment on the car. They were good in the wet, and absolutely awful in the snow/ice - - the car was like Bambi in the snow with them on. I wouldn't have them again.

If it were my money, I would go for the Contis every time unless they were substantially more expensive than the likes of the Avon. When my current set wear out, the likely replacements are Avon, but at the size of mine Contis are likely to sting a bit.

Given the use that you will give them, I doubt either would disappoint.

Right, that's Goodyear forgotten then FC. The Avons are £101 and the Conti's £125 which adds a fair bit to the total price in comparison. We'll sleep on this and let you all know what we decide on. Thanks again. :)

You have to be one step ahead on a lot of these tyre firms, my wife rang me at work back in July that she had a soft tyre while in town. As she was only 200 yards from a small tyre place I suggested she drive slowly down to them, to get them to fix it.
They talked her into 4 new tyres, now I know that the tyres on the car were down to around 3 maybe 2mm but were still legal. I use a local guy who comes to your home and he's asks a fair price for top makes...it's a big problem across the board when it comes to cars and getting good work done at any garage.

Hi Sheal , for the last 10 years I have bought my tyres through Blackcircles . I have used Yokohama and the mid price Kumho tyres both gave excellent grip and wear. On my Mitsubishi I now have Michelin crossclimate tyres ( OK for summer and winter driving ). Not sure how bad the winters are in your area and how essential it is to use the car when required. I live on a hill and it is difficult to drive up to my house when it snows , now I am retired I can stop in bed until the snow clears :snorky:

Lot of talk about road holding skittish steering etc.in this thread.
My personal thoughts are do most of us push these things to the limit ?
                    I know I don't, can't remember the last time I made a tyre squeal going round a roundabout .
As to noise the two new fronts that I have now are Michelin and they are perhaps slightly quieter than the good years I had before.
But to me most road noise comes from the road surface, just listen how it goes quieter on a newly surfaced road.

I agree 100% @pete, I was a trucker for 51 years and there are some roads that are notorious for noise. Sections of the M5 & M25 that are concrete are the worse.

Any sign of ice - the car stays on the drive - we've just stocked up the freezer because the forecast is -4 tonight and we've so far had a mild winter - so IMHO it is likely that we're going to be hit hard by another 'beast from the east.'

Don't want to throw a spanner in here  - but I purchase 'budget' range tyres - because the car is for tootling around town - any more serious trips then a hire car is used.

Personally I think you need to fit winter tyres if you want any chance of going places on snow.
On ice, who knows, rubber dont work on ice, does it?

In most cases it will be the jackknifed artic blocking the road any way, so whatever you have you wont be going anywhere.

I don't push things to the limit as much as I used to, but you can still get certain circumstances where the handling can be a bit more skittish than others; I have also managed snow with standard tyres on prior cars without issue, however if it snows the current one will stay in the drive I think.
