As you know, I can't see the picture but I would guess that if the compost seemed wet it is more likely to be because they've just watered it before taking the photo. There's no need to keep the compost wet. Just don't let it dry out. :dbgrtmb:

@Loki I do my hanging pots that way. I put rounds of metal cloth on the top of the soil too. The seeds germinate and grow up through it and the naughty squirrels can pull the seedlings out.

@mazambo you're doing well. I had re-start some of my hot pepper seeds as the first lot never germinated and I have many that could compete with yours for youngest!

I've had to quarantine one whole tray of seedlings as they have white fly. This is a tray of 40 that are on the windowsill in the kitchen. They were alongside some of last years plants that are still producing and we hadn't seen any obvious evidence of fly on them. On closer examination they had some. So last year's plants have now had all their chillies picked and washed, the plants washed and banished outside under cover but away from other plants - they will survive or die!

The seedlings are getting a check up every two hours and fly removed - they're only at the wingless stage :phew:. It started off with about 30 or 40 being 'removed' (a nice euphemism) each time and there were only five removed at their 4 a.m. check up and four at their 6 a.m. check up.

The other trays are now in my office and getting a regular 'once over'. OK so far :fingers crossed:

The tray with the fly are all Shiney Hybrids which are pretty tough cookies so should have no adverse effects from being manhandled.

I wish this weather would go away and give us real February temperatures. I'm sure that its trying to get me to sow my chilli seeds early and then hit me with a cold snap

@shiney I'm sorry to hear about your unwanted guests but glad to hear you are eliminating them.

My second sowing of some of my peppers is still not producing anything much so I may switch to your paper towel plastic bag method. I figure if they're not going to do anything, I'd prefer to have a visual of them not doing anything rather than staring at little cubes of dirt. (deja vu experience after last year's miserable King Protea failure).

Perhaps sometime I could send you a SASE and some compensation and you could please mail me some Shiney Hyrbrid Seeds? Over here, we really need hardy plants!

They're tough but still need protection, but not as delicate as a lot of them. They are also a small plant that has lots of small hot chillies so don't take up too much space.

PM your address and I'll see whether I have any that are still suitable for sowing. No need for money. :dbgrtmb:

What about getting them through Customs?

I have received seeds from India and other places. They just put them in a small bag marked seeds (in this case it would be Chillie Seeds) and then into a letter envelope along with a short note to say hello. Customs never bothered about them.

My only prohibition on bringing seeds into Canada is when they are on my person/in my luggage. It's a big no no because that is part of the contract I agreed to when applying for my Nexus pass. I imagine, at some time in the past, some numpty must have tried to bring in enough for a farm and that is why they added that rule.

Thank you for your offer. I will pm you my address although by rights, I should send you an SASE, I do have some of your country's postage stamps left from last May :)

Would Jalapeños do well when planted in a sheltered sunny spot?

My experience with chillies in general is that they will grow outside but prefer to be in a greenhouse. As they ripen later in the season you may be fighting the weather to get the last fruits off.
Do you have space for a small greenhouse ? Some of the mini greenhouses will comfortably hold two plants and give shelter for cool nights

                Oh I see -
Space isn't the problem but due to my storm-prone region a mini greenhouse would be destroyed in no time. Perhaps I can find a wee corner in my polytunnel :)

@shiney they didn't see my fingers crossed behind my back. I shared my paperwork proving I have secret level clearance with the feds. All nicely stamped and signed by the RCMP. They still cautioned me that I cannot be running across the border with 10,000. Çanadian dollars... as if ... I tried hard not to laugh but a giggle did slip out.

I'll try to remember to take a pic of my little sprouts when the lights come on after 7.
