Vegetable Growing 2019

I put aside some 'Jazzy' potatoes from a store bought and mostly eaten bag from ASDA a few months ago. Individually wrapped in newspaper, under a desk, in a room where the blinds were kept closed and the radiators were kept off - I thought they'd be fine until I needed to start chitting them. Curiosity got the better of me today and I unwrapped them this afternoon to find this...



Obviously, I was wrong about them being in a dark and/or cold enough spot!

Being a second early, I know I could get away with planting them as a first early and keeping them in the greenhouse until it warms up a bit - but I think mid-January is pushing it a bit.

 

Sweet peas sown yesterday. Today I am sowing Parsley, Aubergines and a few peppers. All on a propagating bench in a heated greenhouse.

I bought a box of Potato Fertilizer at the Pound Shop today, has anyone on here used this before please.

I've decided brassicas are only worthy of the guinea pigs ( any amount of fleece ) the critters still find them!
The kale is still looking good.

 

Yes rhubarb is growing well here right now too
The veg patch is ready for seed sowing which will prob start in a couple of weeks or so

 

2019 veggie season started, parsnip seed in to soak, one of my last veggies of the season is first to be started? Brassica's will be sown this weekend as will my first early spuds (growing bags in the greenhouse). I will also be sowing Tagetes, flowers I know but they do deter white fly and will come in useful in the greenhouse and polytunnel.

 

Sowing tagetes too Vince.....for both gh and for veg patch I think they do help deter whitefly in the gh. Outside I feel their smell helps disguise onion and carrot fly.....look good too

 

Verdun, marigolds to you too! Yes, they do look good but unable to comment on scent as apart from dog f**ts, I've an awful sense of smell!

 

10 days in and the lone cucumber is winning the race. It's safe to say one of the tomatoes is looking a lot less sorry for itself than the other. At this rate, narrowing it down to one won't be too difficult.



Harder to pick them up amongst the grit in the compost mix, but we've got the first signs of lettuce popping up too. Only 6 days in with these so far.

My first harvest of Gai Choy (Chinese mustard greens).



This is a very low maintenance leaf veg. Apart from a single watering at sowing time, nothing else needed to be done over the winter.

 

24 days in and the cucumber has outgrown the propagator lid. Currently debating whether to keep it in there, as it is heated, but with the lid off - or to keep it indoors for the time being.

 

I ended up cutting the bottom off a 3litre pop bottle and using that. Worked pretty well for a freebie fix.



I started the Jazzy potatoes off this afternoon. Between the saved ones I posted up there and 5 seed potatoes I was given, I've got 5 pots (of varying sizes) out of them. The more I look at that smallest one, the more I think I need to put it in something wider.

Weather is supposed to be a bit ropey for the next week or so, so they'll stay in the greenhouse for the time being - before becoming the first occupants of the new corral.

 

I spent the better part of the day up-potting the tom starts as it will be several more weeks before I can even think about putting them outdoors. If, and when, we get some nice weather I can put them in the greenhouse for the afternoon, but right now the temperature is in the 30s F with rain mixed with little ice pellets. Spring in New York is very unpredictable.
