Where I live is quite rural so it is difficult and a long journey for the people in our village to get out to places that sell plants. Our allotment group has raised some plants to sell to the villagers to help raise funds. We have a mix of trays of veg (brassicas etc) and bedding plants, single plants such as toms, cucumbers, melons and courgettes.

It would be easy to compare our prices with the local high priced garden centre but we would rather give fairer prices in comparison to the big chains, can you help?

Please let us know with store name, price and amounts etc if you can, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Steve...:)

We had a similar challenge last weekend when we went to a local nursery. When we asked how much the 16" tall Echiums were the reply was 'I don't know, what do you think they should be'. He honestly didn't know what to charge.

We used ebay as a guide to agree a price. Ended up at £6 each - bargain as crocus wanted £28 plus p&p

Maybe use ebay as your yard stick for fair prices. GC prices, we find, are hugely inflated

We sell on some of our excess stock and base prices on age, nurturing needed to grow (heat) and factor in a bit for rarity. We've sold tomato plug plants for 50p each, larger plants (6 to 8" tall) for £1.

Hi @Steve R , I grow a lot of plants for sale for the charity I work for.
As a rough guideline ( I don't know where you live, so your prices could be slightly higher or lower than ours )...............

Single plants such as Toms/ Cucumbers/Melons etc we sell at 90p.

        Trays of bedding ....
        6's at 99p
        12's at £1.50
        24's at £2.49

I don't do trays of veg ( I just don'tt have the room ) but....

Pots of 6 Runner beans 99p
pots of 6 Broad beans 99p
        pots of 6 peas 79p

Pots of 10 Sweet Peas at £1 each

I also do perennials from seed or cuttings such as Lupins/Carnations & Pinks/ Aquilegias/Delpiniums/Verbena at 79p each.

As a rough guide to how I worked the prices out we have a professional nursery from Shropshire who have a market stall here and his prices are roughly double ours on things like the Toms/Beans/Peas etc
The bedding is generally around £2 for 6 around here ( The Range/Wilkinsons ).

Good Luck , I hope it goes well for you.

We sell our plants depending on size.

Tomato plant prices depend very much on how early in the season whether there is a glut of them. This time of year, if we have some small leftover tomato plants we sell them for 50p. It they're larger then £1. Sometimes you find that everyone has too many tomato plants and you have trouble giving them away!

We don't sell runner beans until the end of May. Then we charge £1.50 for a 10cm pot containing about 10 plants.

We rarely sell bedding plants so can't really help about those.

Yesterday we sold some very healthy, 6" high, Salvia turkestanica in 7cm pots for £2. The look and quality makes a big difference to the price.

Our perennials can be anything from 3 months old, but well rooted, to two years old and sell for £1.50 for young plants and £2.50 for more established ones.

Look and presentation makes a difference. We sell a lot of Allium siculum (always popular) at £1.50 for a well established (potted last year) plant in a 7cm pot and, when we run out of those on Open Day I'm delegated to dig up some more and we sell three bare rooted ones wrapped in a piece of newspaper for £1.50.

Anything in flower can add to the price.

Just a thought, some local authorities don't allow selling of plants from their allotments.

I intend to update one of my earlier postings about our sites tenants, the inherent problems and the parish council when I get a free minute or 10, but suffice to say for now, that relations are very good and we have the blessings of our local parish council to sell plants to fund raise for our newly formed club/association. We can advertise for and sell plants at a nominated time from the site, so for example "Sat 6th AM". So we are getting on with it, or rather I am "driving" things forward.

Thanks all so far, it's much appreciated and very helpful.

It's been a few years since we raised and sold plants for fundraising, probably about 6 years ago, and our aim was to knock them out for much less than everybody else and ensure we sold the lot.

To acheive that we bought bargain end of season compost, tried to use mainly saved seeds and got 1,000s of free pots (with matching pot trays) from a local NT property who plant loads of mass bedding.

We sold Parsley (curly and Italian), Sweet Peas, Corriander and Par-cel, all from saved seeds and for only 3 pots for £1. Potted up Strawberry runners were also knocked out at 3 for £1 and we sold masses of them, over 1,000.

Basil (big Franchi packets from Wyevale 50p seed sale) were 50p, as were all tomatoes and Chilies/Peppers (most from saved or reduced seeds).

Buying end of season wall/hanging baskets from Wilkos at 30p each (complete with liner) and filling with dirt cheap compost and homegrown plants were a good source of income.

Tete a tete daffs, etc., bought from Wiko for 20 (30?) pence, were planted in several pots and sold at a huge profit.

I think we averaged at least £40/week from plant sales at car boot sales, which really helped up get overall takings well over £110 -£130/week at 2012/2013 prices.

And don't forget flowers, such as Gladys and Sweet Williams.

                Thanks Scrungee.

Can anyone let us know what the big stores are charging for their trays of bedding and vegetable plants please, also for single plants such as toms cucumbers and courgettes.

We know how to make the money and or how to discount, we just wish to know what the big stores are charging first. If anyone goes to one of the big stores over the weekend, could you please make a mental note for us. It is a 70 mile round trip for us.

                Many thanks.

B&M price for bedding is £2 a tray or 3 for a £5 if I remember correctly and I think its similar for supermarkets as well. 1 Tomato plant at b&m are 99p I would assume other veg is the same.

The biggest garden centre round here last year charge for bedding about £2.50 for a tray of lobelia £3 for others and £3.75 for trailing begonia .

I am going garden centre tomorrow I'll have a proper look and report back if you like.

Unfortunately their Toms, Squashes, Peppers, etc. only had barcodes on the labels and the signs with prices were missing. (and the quality of them was awful)

80mm pots of herbs (Thyme, Hyssop, Marjoram, etc.) £2.49 or 5 for £10

I wont be going to a Wyevale for some time as I went last week on Tuesday (double points) and used my reward vouchers, plus a further £5 conditional spend voucher, a £ 2.50 off compost voucher, a voucher for a further double points and got some reasonable compost for < 2p/litre.

But I will probably be passing a B&Q on Tuesday and a Dobbies on Friday.
