im buying 4 large thuja trees later today.

The have outgrown the current owners garden so he is digging up the rootballs and I’m collecting this evening.

Ideally I’d like to plant them tomorrow.

Will they be ok overnight with the roots in thick plastic bags?

    Thanks

Yes they will. Water well. Water again. Keep watered ...not drenched....all summer.
I would trim all round too to minimise transpiration .....ideal time now. I would also prune again in August :)

Would it be a better idea to buy some big pots from b&m before they close?

Picked them up. Was a fun drive home.

They are a bit brown on the sides that have been facing the fence. But they will suit what I need them for.

Whatever you do when you plant them, do not trim them. Its too late here! So, with regards to the UK climate, it must be the same there.

If you want to trim them, wait until October at the very earliest when it starts getting cold.

Rubbish! I've taken care of over 200 metres of thuja hedge now for over 30 years, and from personal experience, I can say that trimming them now will increase transpiration, not decrease it.

As with most things to do with gardening, there are different opinions. If you look at this site you will see that they recommend both ideas depending on the age of the trees.

            When to prune thuja hedges

Sometimes we gardeners do have to agree to disagree I am afraid, you two are both very knowledgeable and sometime clashes occur.. ;) So I am sure K78 will take it all on board and make a calculated decision on what to do... There is something I would like to remind you all of though as I am a tree warden..Cutting trees and hedges are covered under the countryside act and we should not be cutting any trees or hedges now anyway unless we are completely sure there are no birds nesting in them.. :old:

The nesting period is not cutting hedges and trees between March and August as this is the main breeding season for nesting birds in UK, although some birds may nest outside this period.

                      I too will apologise.

There is however, one thing that I would like to add to the apology. What we all must remember is that this is a gardening discussion forum. I feel that even if there are disagreements, they should be discussed in a friendly and polite manner.
