Nancy Pelosi yesterday stated there would be no UK-US trade deal if our efforts in brexit impacted the good Friday agreement. Last night there were riots in Ireland and a young journalist murdered

Yeah, but how did that statement cause riots, it said in Tams link that the riots started when the police were searching for weapons.

So do you blame the Derry riots last summer or the car bomb in Derry in January on the americans. These riots are not a one off incident as you are making out. They're just the latest in a long line of incidents.

I would blame the ongoing Northern Ireland problems on the Westminster government. It is so wrapped up in Brexit that it has done nothing to bring back the Northern Ireland Assembly or anything else for that matter.

I don’t recall blaming anyone, nor have I made out riots are a one off.

What I find a touch astounding is that people thought brexit could be accomplished without changing the good Friday agreement. Due to the european-uk border there it is not possible.

I think what she said goes a bit further than just the UK, and would also preclude the EU from any trade agreement:

“If America wants a trade agreement with the European Union, which I think is very desirable – I want it – at the same time you are back to the same issue on the Border if you do anything that dampens or softens the Good Friday Agreement.”

It's the US sticking their big flappy oar in again, trying to raise an individuals profile. Anyone would think electioneering was underway...

Apologies if I interpreted your comments as another example of the apparent 'victim complex' that seems to run through the UK population when it comes to the EU, it was my error.
Noisette 47 does sum it up quite nicely in the following............

Having just returned from a long(ish) weekend
with my better half in Frankfurt I can confirm that view plus some rather less flattering thoughts on the behaviour of certain elements of our parliament and their manoeuvreings. With her being based out there full time now she has yet to come across any unsavoury feelings towards the British people at a personal level but they are sick of the UK position and entrenchment.

                  Exactly that!

Hey! I can finally disagree with you! As a former colonial power whose very infrastructure and long standing wealth has been built on the back of our colonial conquests I think that we have a duty towards them. It is not as if the British Empire used the wealth that we created out of their countries to further their societies, it all came back to us.

Not threatening at all, simply pointing out that peace in Ireland is more important than Brexit!
I've yet to find the McGuinness reference?

Oi! I thought that we'd agreed that the vegans are mine! Stick to yer cyclists and leave the vegans to me :heehee:

What complete and utter rubbish! Read the second paragraph of your own link.

Congratulations :loll: Maybe 'we' do, maybe 'we' don't. (It reads the same whether you're English, French, Belgian, Portugese etc etc). Nothing will convince me, though, that uncontrolled immigration is ultimately of benefit to any country. Especially when the religion and customs of those immigrants don't co-incide with those of the host country. As far as the English are concerned, .....have you been to India? 'We' gave immense benefits to that country, whilst also raping it for it's wealth. Those benefits are still very much in evidence today. Their Civil Service, rail network, education system (and the ambition to become educated). In fact, thinking about it, my home town had an enormous population of Indian and Pakistani immigrants who genuinely did contribute to the 'multiracial harmony and wealth' as the Council put it. But the same couldn't be said for subsequent waves of immigrants from elsewhere. As I'm tying myself up in knots, I'll shut up now and get my coat :mute::biggrin:

I have to agree with that :dbgrtmb:. We've been there many times (can speak the local language :blue thumb: in some places :heehee:) and most of the locals we speak to also agree that although we did a lot of damage the overall situation is a big benefit.

We got ours the other day but I still haven't received any official notification that they want to hire the hall for the polling station! They haven't even put a reserve on the room!
