Hi, can anyone please advise if I’ve made a mistake in where I’ve planted this magnolia?

My logic was to create a bit of a bed and plant other things under it to keep mowing simple. But now I’m worried I might have been better to position it more centrally in the lawn as doubt much will grow well around it?!

It says it’ll grow to 8-12ft - is it too close to the fence? It cost £50 so really don’t won’t to mess it up.

As you can tell I’m new to all this! What you do do? Leave it or move it? It’s been once about 5 weeks and seems to be doing ok.

    Thank you

[IMG] @NoIdeaGardener. I loveMagnolias but don’t have one... Hmm not sure how much sunlight it is going to get there as I do know that if they don’t get enough sunlight they will not flower.. If it is a south facing corner and get sunlight most of the day, then it should be ok

Have a look here it might help you to decide..

    Hi @NoIdeaGardener ,

    First of all :sign0016:

It does really depend on the type/species it is. We have a Magnolia Stellata which is up against a fence facing North West and only gets a couple of hours sun a day and it does really well. It's also much more suited beccause it's a smaller one aswell, only growing to about 5 ft.

Thanks for the link Marley - useful read. Although I’m now a bit baffled which variety it is. The garden centre ticket says Magnolia Soulangeana but it also says 8-12ft which doesn’t correlate. Really hope it’s not going to get to 22ft - definitely in the wrong spot if so

      Thanks KFF:)

Really hoping it is a Stellata as the height matches the garden centre label more accurately. Do garden centres get it wrong? Or can you get smaller Soulangeana varieties?

Thanks for all your help posters.

You can get some Soulangeana Hybrids which only grow 4-5 ft.

I realise this isn't yours , but you can also get " Standard Magnolias " now which are like a bush on top of a 3 ft stem.

The days of Magnolias only being available as trees are long gone ( Thank God ) ☺

I re-read the question. so the answer is to count out the space with your feet and plant accordingly.
