The problem is I’ve completely under watered them I think. I’ve forgotten about them and the soil has been dusty and bone dry.

    Some perished!

Ok then water them when you put them outside tomorrow. :)

Don't worry Kriss mine are similar to yours. Just pinched them out on Saturday. Cosmos rarely disappoint you , in fact sometimes they grow to big. I only grow the dwarf variety these days :blue thumb:

So a period of outdoors during the day and indoors over night to harden off?

Also, someone mentioned planting deep? Do you mean literally making some an extra couple of inches is below soil level when planted out.

Er finally.... it will come as no surprise that I lost track of which variety is which! Can these survive happily enough in pots? Ie. So I can monitor over the next month to work out which are which before planting in their final spot!

Yes, days outside. Nights indoors :)
No, not really a couple of inches deeper but when repotting do so a little deeper every time if plants are lanky :)
Yes,you can keep in pots for longer if you wish to, just keep potting on. I do this often with all sorts of plants until I know exactly where to put them.

I've got some dwarf varieties that I'm trying out for the first time this year; any thoughts on a rule of thumb for how deep their final pot ought to be? The full-sized ones go in a big trough but I'm hoping to squeeze the dwarfs in somewhere a little smaller.

I avoided the dwarf ones this year as some of larger varieties grew enormous!

Should I sow soMe direct to the soil?

I have about 30 established ones so probably more than enough for my small garden!

If you have enough cosmos plants why sow more Kriss?:)
Your plants will be further ahead and better than seed sown now
Cosmos now planted in their final positions.....currently stocky and short through regular pinching and will now grow away fast

my cosmos seeds are coming up like gang busters. have them in a nice big pot. only been about 5 days. also planted a pot of two types of zinnias seeds--one short and one taller, just mixed the seeds together, also coming up already 5 days. lots of color to be had.
