    We have a Woodpecker that has arrived in the orchard to the side of our kitchen patio. He hammers away on the phone pole where our line is connected. Didn't think they would hammer into creosote? :scratch: He's on the far side so can't take a pic.

      Red-bellied woodpecker, range the eastern U.S. from the Canadian border to Florida.
      I have been trying to get a photo of this bird for some time, he is absolutely magnificent.

        I made a syrup feeder to attract hummingbirds and got bonus birds. Northern Orioles which have been scarce here and a couple of Scotts Orioles then Red Winged Blackbirds. Only the Orioles went for the syrup but I'm guessing the blackbirds felt safe to come by having seen the Orioles.

        So much fun!

          There is a female woodpecker of the same species at the feeder and I hope they are nesting, as I would like to have more of them to watch. Today, for the first time, we have Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Baltimore Orioles, both of which are beauties also.

            No photo as the light was not good enough, but there was a baby green woodpecker digging in our lawn yesterday. It's the smallest I've ever seen one and it appeared to be on its own.

              Not being much of a photographer, this is the best shot I could get of the Northern Oriole (he's slightly lighter orange coloured than the Baltimore) - after I looked at the picture, I got rid of that terrible makeshift plastic bottle and found a nice glass one and wove a macramé hanger for it. Next time there is an interesting bird, I'll have a nicer feeder DSCN2649.JPG in the pic :)

                        I drove to the village yesterday and when I got back to the car saw that there was a honey bee in there. I opened the door and he flew out but I'm wondering whether he had come from home - a mile away. If so, what will happen to him?

                        I was also pleased to see that Spot is back :blue thumb:. He is one of the three crows that have been in our garden almost since the turn of the century. Brownie disappeared (presumed dead) a year ago and Spot hasn't been around for a couple of months. I assumed he was dead as well. For all those years they have been in our garden from early morning for three hours. I always wait until early morning to through out any bones and fat from our evening meals and they come and take them away. They even pick up a leg of lamb bone and fly off with it.

                        I don't know where Spot has been but he seems well enough now. :thumbsup:

                          I had a hummingbird come for some syrup last night. I didn't have my camera handy and these little fellows eat and run so I didn't get a picture to share. :doh:I'll put the camera back on my kitchen table..
