    Hi all,

I'm new here and would really appreciate some advice, just purchased a new home, in the garden is a big koi pond which I'd like to fill in due to various reasons, my son being one of them.

It's a big pond with brick around the edge (2ft tall) about 8ft square and at least 8ft deep, what would be the best way to fill and level out in preparation for new turf.

    Thanks.

    Hi and welcome.

Although the dimensions are different from what mine were, the capacity is about the same around 3000 gallons. But with a 2ft wall included in that, it's about 700 gallons fewer.

It took 20 tons of hardcore to fill mine.
It's not something I'd consider tackling myself, though I did dig it out.... with a spade.....filling several skips.... on my own....(my wife made me lots of cups of tea)... but that was over thirty years ago.

Yours looks like a liner pool with a concrete shell.

You'll need to drill some drain holes in the base into the soil below.
You can knock the bricks into the pool to cut down on the amount of hardcore you'll need.
You'll need a layer of gravel on top of with whatever you fill it, which will need "whacking" down, before you add topsoil then turf it.

Here's my thread from a few weeks back.

Thank you so much for the replies, that was my plan, smash the surrounding wall into the pond and the fill with hardcore then topsoil. I’ll also put holes in the sides/bottom for drainage, hopefully I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. Wish me luck.

Hi @Denpot29 I would just plead for you to check whether there are any inhabitants that need to be rescued eg newts, frogs before you dump the wall into it. It looks like the water level is low, but there may still be some things in there...

I think the liner should be removed or it will eventually fill up with rainwater and become stagnant.
