I don’t really grow them anymore, just don’t have the space for veg. I have tried a ‘wigwam’ but yield is just too low. In the main, I grew ‘Polestar’.

20 years or so ago I sowed and grew runner beans very early in the year....early March. A temporary polytunnel was used initially. Most years they cropped by mid June and continued through September. Sold masses of them. Of course, the mild temp down here helped but the odd cold year put paid to the early crop.
The early crops established strong roots having the capacity to crop for a very long time. Masses of compost were trenched in too.
Similarly, carrots, spring onions, beetroot etc were sown that early.
White flowered runners, for me, have the best flavour and produce prolifically. White Lady and Mergoles do well for me

I don't know about growing and eating runner beans I think I'll be eating my words above. Six hours of snow is currently forecast for next Friday with the weather swinging round to the north, typical! It looks like I'll be fetching them back in, not planting out.

I only grow Polestar now. They're a very good flavour but not necessarily the best cropper. I find that they're the best all-rounder from a weather point of view. Other varieties will do better depending on the weather that summer. Some prefer dry and fairly hot (none like hot) and others do much better in cold or wet. :noidea:

So, my GD tomato and 'Louisa' cucumber went a little crazy over the weekend. First thing Saturday morning they were in 'I can get away with leaving it another week' to a sprawling mess. The tomato has easily doubled in size in that time.

              cuctoms.jpg

I've potted the tomato on to a pot that is twice the size, burying a good third of the stem, to buy me a bit more time before it heads into its final container in the greenhouse. The cucumber I'm going to leave for now, as I'm worried moving it twice might do more harm than good. Instead I'll use the time to get stakes in the ground for them both to climb up.

My broad beans (Aquadulce Claudia), planted last autumn.

                They are infested with blackfly...

But, I'm not overly concerned because...

I will get a decent crop soon.

My tomatoes will be taking up the growing space so the beans only need to stay in the ground for about another month.

The garlic scape harvest for today.

They came from these autumn planted ordinary market stall vendor garlic.

The scape is the garlic flower stem. I snip them off to aid bulb production instead of letting it flower and setting seed.

Besides that, they are tender, have a mild garlicky taste and are a real delicacy. I like to use them as stuffing for steamed fish with strips gently pan fried as a garnish.

Those are at least a month earlier in sub-tropical London City than I get here in the rural village outskirts of freezing central England.

I find them more tender if picked when still curled, and tougher if left until they're staight.

Unfortunately, our community garden don't produce curley scapes. They all tend to be straight-ish but tender nonetheless.

They also make a good, but different, snack if dipped in beer batter and deep fried - not quite as healthy :heehee:

The perils of getting someone else to water your veg pots. I wasn't informative enough in my request for a favour and they went for the watering can rather than the mister. As a result and after fishing them out from the layer of mud, my carrots look like this - with only a few able to hold themselves up.

                        carrotgeddon.jpg

Will they be making a miraculous return, or should I start again?

The seed packet says, "best grown under glass", so they are a bit of an experiment for this year.
