My crab apple started the year very well but now is looking very dry. Could it be affected by the tree canopy above it? Is there anything I can do to revive it?

    Thanks.

It's a young tree Jack so probably needs a good deep watering once a week. Try feeding it as well to give it a boost.

Would digging in some of the rotted manure help?

All our fruit trees have a deep mulch (2 or 3 inches, in at least a 18 inch diameter circle) around the base. I top up the mulch twice a year. It helps to keep them fed, retains moisture (v important if other trees nearby) and also supresses weeds. I don’t dig in, as I don’t want to damage any near surface roots, just apply the mulch as a top dressing...
