@Mike Allen ..for me Mike it's the way every year those gnarled thorny ,what look like lifeless stems turn into the most beautiful blooms.I love all Roses especially pink ones and scent they must be scented although I feel guilty saying that as every Rose has a beauty of their own.I just love them.:wub2:

I'm with you @lolimac - I love roses because there are so many colours, shapes and sizes. My preference is a scented old rose in pink or white. I like what David Austin has done to improve the flowering period of roses. What a legacy.
I'm not so keen on yellow or purple but our neighbours have an early flowering, yellow, climbing rose that I can see over our fence and it does look lovely. Borrowed landscape:smile: -I'll take that.

As a young lass, I used to go along a back alley at the top of our street's houses. One or two had roses right at the back ( to deter wanderers from trespassing I expect!!) One house had a creamy moss rose that was always full of moths, caterpillars and butterflies and I would stare and sniff alone as no one else seemed to be there. I loved the wildlife it housed.... Another had a rose I adored and then I found out was "Albertine" and I have grown it in the past to remind me of my childhood. I've always loved the soft multi thorned moss roses for their wonderful perfume. There is no mistaking the rose perfume is there...

Albertine was probably the first rose that ever attracted my attention. It was growing in my aunt/uncle's garden totally ignored and uncultivated, it was the only thing apart from weedy grass that was there. At the time, I was only a kid.

I, even after a lifetime of growing roses, I always shy away from attempting to identify roses by sight. However I am blessed with the main senses, sight, hearing, touch and smell. The fragrance of Albertine has stayed with me and I am confident I gould blindly identify it and others simply by smell.

Sadl in my garden, my Albertine has been damaged by my neighbours washing. Thank fully it is slowly picking up but very slowly. It is shown up somewhat by being flanked on one side by Compassion and on the other by Teasing Georgia.

Roses are the stars of the show today. The perfume is glorious after the rain and although some have suffered a little from the deluge. What would a garden be without them?
