    Hi!!
I have a garden that is heavy clay soil. We brought the house last year and it was massively overgrown with weeds of many varieties!! We have now cleared the garden and want to grass a large section. Please can anyone give me some advise on what to do... Do we need to add sand to the soil? Topsoil? Seed or turf???

    Hi welcome aboard.
Did your old lawn hold water on the surface?
Without seeing first hand we may struggle to insure you have a lawn that’s nice.

If surface water was an issue it makes life harder and you would be best to seek local help regarding drainage as there’s a far bit of work needed to get it right.
How about posting a picture which may be helpful.

It's never had lawn, just weeds. Surface water seems to drain off it pretty well, never noticed boggy patches of earth. Have added some pictures

Here’s a link that runs through the basics for you.
Plant a new lawn by sowing grass seed or laying turf

In a nut shell you need at least 150mm of topsoil which you may have there but if it’s clay it’s best to remove it and have good topsoil, and it’s all about the preparation.
Have you had any quotes for putting in a lawn?

No by all means if you are happy and confident it should not be to hard. It’s all down to preparation.
The link is pretty straight forward to follow and with some work it should turn out well. It’s just a choice of seed vs turfing.
