Still can't grasp the dead heading process, I just pull of the dead flowers but last year it didn't produce more flowers. 20190804_211201.jpg

Mazambo, you're careful not to damage nearby buds aren’t you?:)

Gently pulling off those dead flowers isn’t going to make any difference except to help appearance and keep the plant clean. I’m not obsessed about doing this but I do when I get close to them

When a stem has finished you can cut it off but I’m not convinced this effects future blooming on cannas. However, I do cut these off

Do you grow them in containers? They need good compost...John innes...and plenty of goodness included to flower well.

I have lots of cannas here that have been flowering for a few weeks now and will continue to do so well into autumn. For me, they simply want to flower as much as possible.

The best way I think to get good cannas ...and therefore good flowers....is to feed well and to keep soil reasonably moist and to give them plenty of sunshine :)

Don't deadhead Cannas, new flowers come up from within the old 'dead' flower !

I used to dead head, but only down to the top leaf, which usually encloses the stem, not a proper leaf as such.
From that point most make a new flower spike, some eventually make three from that point.

Do you just leave them now @pete and do you think it makes no difference ?

I dont grow them anymore, just got a couple hanging on.
I think it may only make a difference to flowering if it sets seed.

The old flower stems do make the plant look slightly untidy I think.

I have some large clumps of Pretoria ....maybe 8’ or so across....at the back of a border that are never deadheaded or flowers removed from. They just spread until I decide to intervene every few years. I can’t easily get to them, that’s why :)

Quite honestly I am not aware of any difference in flower power between these and others that are more accessible and are regularly tidied etc., except the latter do look more attractive and pristine :) I also notice the odd snail attracted to the dying flowers on the untidied cannas that are not seen on the “clean” ones :)

Probably a lot later flowering than others but I'm pleased with the cannas, red velvet plenty of buds (by the way I've decided not to remove dead flowers) and looks like singapore girl is just throwing up a flower stem, not sure if the Tropicana has a flower stem or another leaf. 20190809_183432.jpg 20190809_183424.jpg

As with most of my cannas this will stay planted and should make a big clump next summer

Watching garderners world last night and Monty Don was feeding his cannas liquid seaweed and said tomato feed was just as good, just wondering if everyone here does it too?

Well, I’m a great believer in seaweed but cannas are simply greedy; thirsty too. Like my golden retriever, they will gulp down as much food as you can give them:)

I must be doing something right......they grow big and flower from early summer through to late autumn.
I feed with fish blood and bone in early spring then thickly mulch with local compost mixed with dried manure or chicken pellets. Mid season I add fb and b.
I have a few spare cannas in pots too and these are treated just the same except a slow release fertiliser and a liquid tomato feed with added seaweed now and then during the summer. Tomato feed and liquid seaweed are high in potash of course.....ideal for all plants in containers

I like Monty....not seen this week’s GW yet....but a week or two ago he was singing the praises of liquid comfrey!!??
