I was going to take a photo of my new delphinium but I didn't get the chance. Yes it's in a 3l pot. It looks a good specimen. The flowers have gone over and there is plenty of foliage. I don't have to do anything with it now. I would be more than happy to stick it in a bigger pot for now and come back to it in the spring. I can use the pot to mark the alloted space. If it came to it, I could even plant the pot. Thay would make it easier to dig up again.

A nursery about 10 miles away is selling off all its remaining summer hanging baskets at £2.99. There are a few hundred of them so I popped down for a look. At least half of them are so far gone as to be no good unless you wanted the basket which would have cost more than that.

I bought four of them. One was good, another reasonable and the other two just OK but still a very good deal. We may be able to improve them by some careful deadheading and pruning.

Here are some shots of them (before we tidied them up) with a few having photos from more than one angle.

Just nipped in wilko for some tree stump killer and couldn't resist picking 20190902_123702.jpg 20190902_123645.jpg 20190902_123640.jpg up an orchid for £2.50, I know absolutely nothing about them, just had a quick Google and I think it's a moth orchid?

This is my new delphinium. Hopefully I'll get the time to do something with it later today.

Hi Jack that looks like a nice strong plant. As I didn't know if it was in flower I held back from commenting on how to treat, but now I've seen it I would advise leaving it in the pot and planting the Delphinium in it's pot in the place you want and let it over Winter and then, when it's showing some initial growth, take it out of the pot and plant it permanently........you could also split it then should you want to.:love30::thumbsup:

I left the delphinium in its pot and planted it next to it's big brother as @ARMANDII suggested. :dbgrtmb:

Yesterday I picked up this mushroom

It's my wife's fault. I couldn't justify the money as we are going away at the end of this week and I won't get payed before we go. She insisted that I got them while I saw them. I did what I was told. Who needs to eat anyway. :dunno:

My main reservation about delphinium in pots in the ground is slugs. They love pots, they love delphiniums in early spring. They will, for sure, have an ideal habitat so be aware.
The other thing is this is the time when herbaceous make plenty of root growth.....in a pot that won’t happen! :noidea:

Who said gardening was simple n straightforward?

Hi @Verdun I could just as easily stick the delphinium in the ground and be done with it. It's easy enough to get to if I need to move it at a later date.

I'm getting to the point where I only buy plants if I know I can find a permanent home for them. As my garden develops I get fewer places to dump random pots. Its saving me money and keeping my garden tidier.

Will my antirrhinum (middle picture) come back next year?

Yes Gary....it’s a good size plant so get it planted. Delphiniums love plenty of organic matter in the soil so dig some in at planting time.:)
Re slugs.....I find watchfulness in early spring when new shoots are appearing is essential. Protect them then and they usually grow away with less susceptibility

I know what you mean.....too many pots here too. Plants are better and happier (generally) in the ground. I tend to feel plants in containers are stifled and a tad artificial anyway and “happier” in association with other plants.

Antirrhinums are usually biennial so poss, prob, may not come back next year. They can, have done here, flower again the following year. They will self seed but be different to the parent plant

That's what I thought. My mum has random antirrhinum that came from nowhere. That's a bit different to growing them where you want them. Perhaps, if I someday get a green house, I could start to take a few cuttings of plants I wanted to keep.

Achillea 'Lilac Beauty', Salvia 'Nachtvlinder' and Echinacea 'Magnus'. Pollinator-tastic! :) Plants arrived promptly and in good condition from the Beth Chatto Gardens. Will certainly buy from them again!
